Basic Prayers

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Amen.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, make me holy
Body of Christ, be my salvation
Blood of Christ, let me drink your wine
Water flowing from the side of Christ, wash me clean
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
Kind Jesus, hear my prayer
Hide me within your wounds
And keep me close to you
Defend me from the evil enemy
And call me at the hour of my death
To the fellowship of your saints
That I might sing your praise with them
for all eternity. Amen.

The Angelus

V- The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R- And she conceived by the Holy Spirit. (Hail Mary….)

V- Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

R- Be it done unto me according to thy word. (Hail Mary….)

V- And the Word was made Flesh.

R- And dwelt among us. (Hail Mary….)

V- Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

R- That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

LET US PRAY: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Saint Michael Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

The Memorare to the Blessed Mother

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The Memorare to Saint Joseph

Remember, O most pure spouse of the Virgin Mary, my beloved Patron, that never it has been heard that anyone invoked your patronage and sought your aid without being comforted. Inspired by this confidence I come to you and fervently commend myself to you. Despise not my petition, O dearest foster father of our Redeemer, but accept it graciously. Amen.

The Morning Offering

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day, in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for the intentions of your Sacred Heart, the salvation of souls, reparation of sin, the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all apostles of prayer, and in particular for those intentions recommended by Our Holy Father for this month. Amen.

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

I give myself and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being other than to honor, love and glorify the Sacred Heart. This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all His, and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him. I therefore take You, O Sacred heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assurance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life and my sure refuge at the hour of death.

Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the strokes of his righteous anger. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in You, for I fear everything from my own wickedness and frailty, but I hope for all things from Your goodness and bounty.

Remove from me all that can displease You or resist Your holy will; let your pure love imprint Your image so deeply upon my heart, that I shall never be able to forget You or to be separated from You.

May I obtain from all Your loving kindness the grace of having my name written in Your Heart, for in You I desire to place all my happiness and glory, living and dying in bondage to You. Amen.

St. Augustine’s Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.  Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.

Peace Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Prayer of Transformation

Lord, take my hands. I give them to you so you may continue to bless, to heal, work, feel, comfort, and love. Forgive me for using them for things against your will. Lord, take my mouth. I give it to you so you may continue to speak, preach, build up, comfort, and love. Forgive me for all the times I have hurt you and your people with my mouth. Lord, take my nose and my senses. I give them to you so you may continue to sense good from evil, and smell the fragrance of your love in all people. Forgive me for distorting this for my own will. Lord, take my eyes. I give them to you so you may continue to see the good in all men, the Spirit of your Father, the Spirit of your love. Forgive the times I have seen only the evil and then judged. Lord, take my ears. I give them to you so you may continue to listen and hear the cry of the lonely. Forgive me for all the times I have closed them, closed them to your Truth. Lord, take my feet. I give them to you so you may continue to lead myself and others in the path of your love. Forgive me for using them to follow a path of selfishness. Lord, take my body. I give it to you so you may continue to suffer so as to carry on my dying to myself. Forgive me for wanting to use it for the desires of the flesh. Lord, take my mind. I give it to you that I may think the way you think. Forgive me for so often thinking with the mind of the world or the flesh. Lord, take my heart. I give it to you so you may continue to love and understand. Forgive me for all the times I have let my heart be hardened. Lord, take my life. I give it to you so you may continue to live through me. Forgive me for wanting to only live for myself. Lord, I give you my very self. Everything. All that I am. Just as I am. I give myself to you so that your will and not mine may always be done in me. Amen.  – Fr. Larry Richards

Prayer for the Miracle of God’s Love

Our Father, here I am, at your disposal, your child, use me to continue your loving the world, by giving Jesus to me and through me, to each other and to the world. Let us pray for each other, that we allow Jesus to love in us, and through us, with the love with which His Father loves Him. Amen.  – Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Prayer for Discernment

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you and I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road although I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are ever with me and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Amen.  – Thomas Merton

Prayer of Abandonment

Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures. I wish no more than this, O Lord.   Into your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself to you, to surrender myself into your hands, without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father. Amen.  – Charles de Foucauld

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartfully sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishment, but most of all because I have offended Thee my God, Who is all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that he will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because you have revealed them who are eternal truth and wisdom, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this faith I intend to live and die. Amen.

Act of Hope

O Lord God, I hope by your grace for the pardon of all my sins and after life here to gain eternal happiness because you have promised it who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind, and merciful. In this hope I intend to live and die.  Amen.

Act of Love

O Lord God, I love you above all things and I love my neighbor for your sake because you are the highest, infinite and perfect good, worthy of all my love.  In this love I intend to live and die. Amen.

Miraculous Medal Prayer

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, and for those who do not have recourse to thee, especially the enemies of the Church and those recommended to thee. Amen.

Guardian Angel Prayer

Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day (or night) be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Grace Before Meals

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grace After Meals

We give Thee thanks for all Thy benefits, O Almighty God, who livest and reignest world without end. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

The Magnificat

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children forever.

Litany of Poverty

Lord Jesus, you only say what you hear the Father say: Lord have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you only do what you see the Father doing: Christ have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you remind us the Son has nothing on his own: Lord have mercy.

Jesus, hear us. Jesus, hear us.

Jesus, graciously hear us. Jesus, graciously hear us.

God, the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us.

God, the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us.

God, the Holy Spirit, bond between both, have mercy on us.

Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us.

Mary, handmaid of Father, pray for us.

Jesus you are the Way to the Father, so in your name I ask:

Father, in my powerlessness, claim me.

Father, in my nothingness, claim me.

Father, in my poverty, claim me.

Father, in my confusion, claim me.

Father, in my insanity, claim me.

Father, in my wounds, claim me.

Father, in my brokenness, claim me.

Father, in my pride, claim me.

Father, in my fear, claim me.

Father, in my doubt, claim me.

Father, in my lust, claim me.

Father, in my spiritual laziness, claim me.

Father, in my anger, claim me.

Father, in my vanity, claim me.

Father, in my resistance to others, claim me.

Father, in my self-rejection, claim me.

Father, in my unforgiveness, claim me.

Father, in my disease of sin, claim me.

Father, in my self-reliance, claim me.

Father, in my body and blood, claim me.

Father, in my bones, claim me.

Father, in my fear of death, claim me.

Father, in my fear that I am not good enough, claim me.

Father, in my fear that I am unloved, claim me.

Father, in my fear that I am alone, claim me.

Father, in my fear that I am an outcast, claim me.

Father, in my broken habits, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I hide from you, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I hide from others, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I hide from myself, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I deal myself, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I deal others, claim me.

Father, in the wounds I deal your Church, claim me.

Father, in my hesitation to receive love, claim me.

Father, in my hesitation to love, claim me.

Father, in my desire to control reality, claim me.

Father, in my strangling of your gifts, claim me.

Father, in my blindness of heart, claim me.

Father, in my dull heart, claim me.

Father, in my hardened heart, claim me.

Father, in my wounded heart, claim me.

Father, in my fear of feeling too much, claim me.

Father, in my fear of feeling too little, claim me.

Father, in my exhaustion, claim me.

Father, in my limits, claim me.

Father, in my failure, claim me.

Father, teach me to die in your Son, so that he may rise in me.

Father, help me to accept my poverty, for the salvation of my brothers and sisters.

Father, teach me to surrender these desires, so that I may receive your

salvation.

I consecrate myself to you Father through your Son and in your Holy Spirit not in spite of my sinfulness and brokenness, but in it.  I give you this poverty of mine because you make beautiful things out of the dust.   So many are the places that draw me from you, help me to stay in your Love and Truth, who are Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Mary, my mother, my sister, my bride, in these my memories, thoughts, feelings, and desires, be the consolation of my heart and the whole world.   May I be Jesus in the World.
